Film Suggestion

For this post, find a film about a visual artist that you'd like to watch for the "students choice" movie on Nov. 17. Explain why you chose the film and what you think it would contribute to the course. You may not have seen the film you choose but do your best to express why you believe we should watch it in this class.

My choice for the student film is "Factory Girl" which documents the relationship between Andy Warhol and his muse Edie Sedgwick. Personally, this is one of my favorite films because of the way in which it tell the story of Warhol as an artist. Much like Frida, this film focuses on the personal as well as larger influences that dictated much of Warhol's work. I think this film would be beneficial to the class because it docuents the social context under which Warhol worked. Although the film is primarily about Edie Sedgewick, it nicely parallels her life with her job as Warhol's muse. And since we are constantly talking about artistic inspiration in class, I think this film does a nice job of clearly bridging the gap between artistic creativity and drawing on real life inspiration. This film could be useful--maybe giving a better insight as to how the influences around a particular artist play into the actual conception of their work.
